Despite production, Jones doesn't stick with NFL teams long

NFL running back Thomas Jones is the Rodney Dangerfield of professional football – he gets no respect.

Jones signed recently with the Kansas City Chiefs after he was released by the New York Jets.

Players are released all the time, but rarely are players shown the door after rushing for 1,402 yards and helping his team make it to the conference championship game. Such is the case for Jones.

In three seasons with New York, Jones rushed for 1,402, 1,312 and 1,119 yards respectively. That’s good production for any running back.

But the Jets have Shonn Greene waiting in the wings so it was “see ya” for Jones.

That’s a bad break, but it’s not the first time it has happened to Jones.

The running back rushed for 1,210 yards in 2006 for the Chicago Bears. He started all 16 games, lost just one fumble and was a key part of the Bears Super Bowl push.

The year before, he rushed for 1,335 yards in 15 games. But it was the same story in Chicago.

But, the Bears had used a fourth overall pick on Cedric Benson and traded Jones to give Benson an opportunity.

Here’s to hoping Jones works out for the Chiefs. Kansas City has parted ways with unhappy Larry Johnson, so anyone else should be a breath of fresh air for the franchise.

And for Jones’ sake, he better hope the Chiefs don’t draft a young running back in April’s draft.
